The start.....
My grandmother Lucy Hellard always told a tale of how her family had links to Epperstone Manor..... curiosity got the better of me and in 2002 I started looking into my ancestry.
It didn't take long to confirm in 1867 Epperstone Manor was acquired by Thomas Huskinson, who was my 3rd Great Grand Uncle. I have since been in contact with one of Thomas Huskinson's direct descendants who kindly shared diaries and sketches belonging to Major Thomas William Huskinson. These diaries tell truly enchanting stories of a childhood growing up in Epperstone, his work as a Land Agent and frequent visits to Southwell and Newark on Trent.
His diary in 1880 mentions a visit to the Musters Arms, at Annesley where old Gaza Roe (my 3rd great-granduncle) stood waiting to receive us. The best specimen of a substantial English publican and farmer I know. A great musician and leader of the choir and also a traveler in France, Germany, Scotland and Ireland.
Since 2002 my tree has grown and branched into many directions. with pioneers, soldiers, writers, musicians and sportsmen.
I've shared knowledge with distant cousins, swapped photos and stories, come across dead ends where I can get no further. Most importantly I feel lucky to have peered through a window into the past.
I have tried to capture some of these lives and stories on this site, so hopefully they will not be lost and continue to be shared and told.
